CD creator burns copy-protection effortsPhilips, because of conformity issues, has warned the record labels that the [new copy-protected] discs are actually not CDs at all [they won't play back on computers and certain CD players] and must bear warning labels to inform consumers. [...] That means labels would also be barred from using the familiar "compact disc" logo that has been stamped on every CD since Philips and Sony jointly developed the technology in 1978. [CNET News.com]

You gotta love Philips's move. Do the record labels really expect consumers to accept this farce? If I'm goint to pay $15+ for a music CD, I expect to be able to listen to it anywhere I go using any device I want to.

Study: Broadband fees climbed in 2001. If your bill for high-speed Internet access rose in 2001, you're not alone. A new study says 83 percent of broadband cable Internet service providers increased prices last year. [CNET News.com]

Broadband defectors on the rise. Katy Ling, a software consultant who had her home wired for high-speed Internet access last year, did what many technology analysts said would never happen: She bailed out of broadband. [CNET News.com]

Dos artículos interesantes para hoy:

Break the speed limit! How faster broadband could be yours - David Coursey,
Executive Editor, AnchorDesk

Here's the deal. You know this broadband stuff I've been talking about? Full-time, high-speed Internet connections for your home and office? Well, it really isn't so broadband after all. And today I'd like to raise the speed limit--and enlist your help in getting more bandwidth delivered to all of us. What we have now doesn't even hint at what's possible.

The nine assassins of broadband - John C. Dvorak, PC Magazine

The great Broadband Revolution is moribund, overrated, and misunderstood. What we have today is what we can expect to have in the years ahead: a rich Web, accessed through moderate connectivity (via AOL). You'll find all those people who banked on broadband in the unemployment line.

Xbox may spawn entertainment hub

Microsoft plans to transform its new Xbox game console into a general home device that handles everything from e-mail to video recording, according to analysts.

by David Becker @ cnet News.com
